School and Community Food Infrastructure in Durham
Feasibility Study & Design Analysis
In the fall of 2019, FIG began a feasibility study and design analysis for new school and community food infrastructure in Durham. What was intended to be a yearlong investigation stretched to 18 months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis provided an opportunity to explore the role of school food in our community from a new angle. The full report and summary report below present a synthesis of our findings and recommendations.
We were honored to partner with DPS School Nutrition Services Executive Director, Jim Keaten, and many others throughout the DPS and Durham communities to explore the potential for a hub kitchen. These reports mark only the first step toward realizing this potential.
If you would like to be engaged in next steps, please consider reaching out to FIG or your elected officials with questions, concerns, or ideas. Please also talk with your neighbors, family, and friends about this project and encourage them to share their thoughts and support.
