S.P.O.O.N. (Student Power Over Our Nutrition)
S.P.O.O.N. is a curriculum designed to empower middle school students to understand school food systems, and then advocate for climate-conscious, student-supporting, labor-rights oriented school meal programs. S.P.O.O.N. was developed in partnership with Lauren Gerald and funded in part by Self-Help Credit Union.
FIG piloted the program with Durham Public Schools, including students and staff from Carrington Middle School, Lowe’s Grove Middle School, and Neal Middle School. Students spent a year learning and applying their learnings to hands-on education and advocacy activities.
